Women in the Bible

Part 1: Matriarchs of the Family         Tamar, Miriam, Rahab, Jael, Athaliah, Huldah, Gomer, Vashti, Sapphira, Lois, Junia—who were those women? What do you know about them? This fall Brother Loren plans to offer a course titled Matriarchs of the Family, the first in what could be a seven-part series on women in the Bible. Besides such familiar women as Sarah, Hagar, and Lot’s wife, we’ll also look at others such as Keturah, Bilhah, and Potiphar’s wife—all the women of Genesis 12-50.

The course is open to all men and women who want to deepen their appreciation of the role of woman in the story of salvation. Participants will meet once a week for five 90-minute sessions. The course will be offered during the day or in the evening, depending on the schedules of the participants. There is no fee; free will offerings are accepted. Please call 610-258-3053, ext 48, to express your interest or to learn more.

If this fall’s course proves worthwhile, future offerings might focus on (a) heroes and victims of liberation; (b) prophets, royalty, and their associates; (c) heroes of fiction and propaganda; (d) relatives, companions, and other contemporaries of Jesus; (e) early Christians and their contemporaries; and (f) woman in myth, poetry, parable, and essay.

“Wherever the good news is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in remembrance of her.”                    Mark 14:9
